Overview

The Pasco County Sheriff’s office is committed to the success of youth who wish to pursue careers in law enforcement. In order to more effectively mirror the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Academy training, Post 916 Explorer training will mirror that of the Pasco-Hernando Community College Law Enforcement Academy. FDLE requires 770 clock hours of training for law enforcement cadets and 420 clock hours for correctional officers. The Post 916 Explorer Post will provide an opportunity for the explorers to gain a thorough understanding of all the law enforcement subjects required to be successfully selected for employment. Our annual training plan will provide 840 clock hours of law enforcement related training for the 2019-2020 School Year. (See Tables A & B).

Training Objective

Post 916’s annual training plan is designed to orient the explorers and provide them all the tools necessary to obtain an agency sponsored scholarship to the law enforcement or corrections academy. This can ultimately lead to a position at the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. Obtaining a sponsorship by the sheriff’s office will no doubt be a challenging goal. It is highly recommended that potential and current explorers take advantage of all the training opportunities offered during the year. Regular testing and report writing will also be a requirement. Any law enforcement officer knows that a successful law enforcement officer knows how to write well.

Multi-Year Design

A freshman high school student who decides to join the post has the opportunity to gain 6 years of law enforcement and corrections related experience. A first year probationary explorer will begin by attending an explorer meeting. After attending two meetings where a thorough background will be conducted, they may get an opportunity to embark on a rewarding career.

*Freshman Year (14-15 years old): Probationary Explorer. They must complete the Phase I-IV Field Training Program and attend as many Tuesday night meetings possible. They must be available for community service hours. All community service hours will be given credit for future scholarship opportunities. There will also be additional training opportunities available based upon successful progress.

*Sophomore Year (15-16 years old): Fully qualified explorer. Complete the Ride-Along Academy (32 Clock Hours). They can enter the Phase V Field Training program which is the Ride-Along Program. They should have completed 10 shifts of Law Enforcement Ride-Along (80 Clock Hours). They must be available for community service hours. They will be given credit for future scholarship opportunities. It is recommended they attend the Honor Guard Academy (24 Hours), Defensive Tactics Academy (40 Clock Hours), and the Leadership Academy (Clock 65 Hours).

*Junior Year (16-17 years old): Explorer with a Ranked Position (Corporal-Sergeant). The explorer will become an integral member of the running of the post. They should be available for community service hours. They will be given credit for future scholarship opportunities. The explorer continues to gain proficiency in all the post annual training opportunities. The explorer can potentially attend the FBI LEEDA Academy in Quantico, VA. The explorer will likely be a member of the Florida Association Police Explorer Post 916 State Team as a competitor. The explorer will attend numerous state and national law enforcement training events. The explorer is eligible to apply for the Post 916 pistol team. The explorer will continue Phase V Field Training which is the Ride-Along Program. Complete 20 shifts of Law Enforcement Ride-Along (160 Clock Hours).

*Senior Year (17-18 years old): Explorer with Leadership Rank (Lieutenant). Post Leadership. The explorer attends all training and will continue to become more proficient in numerous law enforcement skill-sets. The explorer will likely be a member of the Florida Association Police Explorer Post 916 State Team. The explorer will attend numerous state and national law enforcement training events. The explorer is likely a member of the Post 916 pistol team. The explorer will continue Phase V Field Training which is the Ride-Along Program. Completed 30 shifts of Law Enforcement Ride-Along (240 Clock Hours).

*First Year College (18-19 years old): Explorer with Leadership Rank (Captain). Post Leadership. The explorer will attends all training and continue to become more proficient in numerous law enforcement skill-sets. Completed 40 shifts of Law Enforcement Ride-Along (320 Clock Hours).

*Second Year College (19-20 years old): Explorer with Leadership Rank (Captain-Analyst). Post Leadership. The explorer/analyst will attend all training and continue to become more proficient in numerous law enforcement skill-sets. The explorer/analyst will likely be a member of the Florida Association Police Explorer Post 916 State Team as a competitor. The explorer/analyst will attend numerous state and national law enforcement training events. The explorer/analyst is likely a member of the Post 916 pistol team. The explorer/analyst continues Phase V Field Training which is the Ride-Along Program. Completed 50 shifts of Law Enforcement Ride-Along (400 Clock Hours). The explorer will transition to a training analyst volunteer and aide the advisors of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

*Achieve the goal of sponsorship to the FDLE Academy. Become 21 Year Old (Deputy Sheriff) prepared for the career while remaining highly successful in the Field Training Program.  A deputy on the FTO program receives 1020 Hours of New Member Orientation and Field Training before being released. If you take advantage of the training opportunities offered by the explorer program, you will either be highly successful or much more aware of your suitability for law enforcement.
